Mat's Lullaby
Well here it is, my lullaby. As we had to base our piece on a children's story I decided that my basis would be 'The Owl and the Pussycat' by Edward Lear. I know that this is tecnically a poem as opposed to a 'story', yet it is a most enchanting piece of literature that I myself used to love and constantly read again and again as a child...
The Owl and the Pussycat
The Owl and the Pussycat went to seaIn a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are, you are, you are,
What a beautiful Pussy you are."
Pussy said to the Owl "You elegant fowl,
How charmingly sweet you sing.
O let us be married, too long we have tarried;
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows,
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose, his nose, his nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling your ring?"
Said the Piggy, "I will"
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon.
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand.
They danced by the light of the moon, the moon, the moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.
With regards to my composition I decided to try and replicate the song that the owl played to the pussycat; yet without any vocals, as both time and facilities were limited.
Of course, I had to use a guitar as this was how the owl serenaded the pussycat. This meant that I had a decent excuse for commandering my father's beautiful Ovation, as I needed an electric-acoustic guitar that could be plugged in and recorded. I wanted to use the guitar for all three parts that we had to complete. It worked well for the melody and harmony parts, yet was to prove insubstantial for the bassline. This therefore was composed in MIDI.

My composition does not sound like most people's traditional idea of a lullaby, yet is a simple, gentle piece of guitar-based music. I certianly believe that this piece of music reflects the other-worldly fantasy as depicted in Edward Lear's original poem.
